First hearings of three academics have been held in 25th Heavy Penal Court. Presiding Judge Yılmaz has said, “We don’t read indictments to understand but out of procedure”.

Trials of academics, who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime" prepared by the Academics for Peace, continued in İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse after the new court year began.

We, the signatory academics to the Peace Declaration that went public in January 2016, have been subjected to multiple forms of intimidation, repression, defamation by governmental authorities as well as by pro-AKP groups in Turkey for more than two years. Despite all the pressures we have stood for our claim to peace in our country. Despite all the intimidation we opted to stand in solidarity against the breach of our academic rights and liberties.

Court has ruled release of Prof. Dr. Hamzaoğlu and Socialist Women’s Assembly Spokesperson Çelebi.

Verdict has been announced in the first hearing of trial of 11 politicians including Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) Co-Spokesperson and Academics for Peace member Prof. Dr. Onur Hamzaoğlu and Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Deputy Chair and Socialist Women’s Assembly (SKM) Spokesperson Fadime Çelebi.

On 4 July 2018, lawyer and academic Hanifi Barış was arrested for posts he made on social media. During his interrogation, he was accused of creating “terrorist propaganda” by sharing news articles, despite the fact that he had not added any of his own commentary. His lawyer appealed the decision and requested his release, however his appeal was denied, first by the 10th Criminal Judgeship of Peace on 10 July and then by the 11th Criminal Judgeship of Peace on 12 July.
